How To Kill Two Birds With One Stone

Two birds (no stone)

Two birds (no stone)

If you are thinking of making more than one new year’s resolution for 2010, here’s a few quick tips on how to kill two birds with one stone, by making your new year’s resolutions work together:

1. “I want to stop smoking” and, 2. “I want to get out of debt”
If you are a regular smoker then you probably spend quite a lot on cigarettes. When you cut down on your smoking, invest the money that you save into a piggy bank. If you are a heavy smoker you will soon find that there is around a hundred dollars saved (or maybe even more depending on how much you have cut down) by the end of the month – use this extra money to pay off your credit card. Saved even more than you expected? Use a small amount to treat yourself (to something healthy!) – this will keep you motivated towards your goals.

1. “I want to be more friendly to the environment” and, 2. “I want to get fit and healthy”
There’s a couple of ways these two can work together. Do you drive to work? If so, this is doing nothing for your fitness and is bad for the environment. Try taking a brisk walk to the bus stop instead. Slightly better for the environment and the walk every day will do you good. Better still, don’t use motorised transport at all, replace driving for cycling or even walking if your place of employment is close enough.

Another way is by changing the way you buy food. Buy fresh, unpackaged fish, meat and vegetables as opposed to pre-packaged food which is full of preservatives, salt, sugar, fat etc. I’m not an expert nutitionist by any means, but I know fresh food is better than packaged food, and the fact it comes without packaging means you are doing your small bit for the environment too.

1. “I want to learn something new” and, 2. “I want to spend more time with family/friends”
This one is easy. Whatever you decide to do, find out if someone from your family or friends wants to do it too. Learning a new skill, taking up a new sport or joining a club is a great way to build stronger bonds of friendship between family/friends. Can’t find anyone who is interested in the same things as you? No problem, there should be plenty of other people interested in your new hobby, and people with the same interests are likely to become good friends too.
