6 Tips for Keeping your New Years Resolutions in 2010

1. Set an Inspiring New Year’s Resolution

When setting new year’s resolutions, make sure you pick something that you are passionate about and believe in. There is no point in setting a resolution for something if your heart is not really in it. Ask yourself, “what do I really want to achieve in 2010″ and come up with a new years resolution based around that.

2. Be Specific

For example, if your new year’s resolution doesn’t have to take an entire year to complete (and it’s probably best if it doesn’t), try setting a deadline when you would like to achieve it by. Your resolution should not be broad or vague, it should be realistic and measureable. Want to get out of debt? Don’t just say “I want to get out of debt”. Try saving an extra $100, $200, $500 every month – whatever you want it to be, as long as it is a value you can stick to, you will find yourself sticking to the resolution.

3. Visualise Success

If you are passionate about your new years resolution (see point 1 above), then you will have an idea of what it feels like to achieve that goal. Visualise achieveing your resolution and it will make you more determined to keeping it.

4. Put Your New Year’s Resolutions on Display

Create a visual reminder of your New Year’s resolutions – a list, a picture, a planner – whatever it is, a visual reminder will help you with keeping your new years resolutions in 2010.

5. Take Baby Steps

Don’t try and achieve your new years resolution by Jan 2nd. Break your resolution down into smaller steps and this will make it easier to achieve. Want to pay off your $2000 credit card debt which has just been sitting there for the last year (or longer)? See point 2 above – set a goal to pay off an additional $250 a month.

6. Reevaluate Your New Year’s Resolutions

Reevaluating your new years resolutions will not only keep it at the forefront of your mind, but will also help you to see if you are on track. If you are behind schedule, put in a bit more effort. If the new years resolution is no longer achievable, don’t give up entirely, just set a new goal which is achievable. If you are no longer passionate about the resolution or your circumstances have changed, make up a new goal – you can make resolutions at any time of the year, not just in December/January.
